How to Calculate Volumetric Weight for Air Freight

You can calculate your shipment’s volumetric weight for air freight by multiplying the three dimensions of the crate in cm and dividing the answer by 6000.  The air freight volumetric weight calculation is length x width x height (all in cm)/6000.

An Example of Using the Volumetric Weight Calculation

If you have a crate which is 1.2m x 1m x 0.9m, you multiply 120cm x 100cm x 90cm = 1,080,000.  Divide this by 6000 = 180.  Your volumetric weight is 180kg.  If the crate weighs less than this then you will be charged based on 180kg, if it weighs more then you will be charged the actual weight.

Why do you Need to Understand the Volumetric Weight for Air Freight?

It’s a good idea to grasp the concept that air freight is charged based on either gross weight or volume, which ever is greater.  This is important because if you have a really light item you may think it won’t be particularly expensive to ship via air freight, however, if the item is very large, then it will cost more than you might expect.  Similarly, if you have a small item, but it is heavy, the cost is likely to be based on the gross weight.
